Panthers Secure Anton Lundell with Six-Year Deal
The Florida Panthers have solidified their future by locking in center Anton Lundell with a six-year, $30 million contract. The 22-year-old Finnish forward's new deal will carry a cap hit of $5 million annually, ensuring that he remains a pivotal part of the team’s core moving forward.
Lundell, who was a restricted free agent, enjoyed a notable season that showcased his evolving talents and significant contributions to the team's success. Last season, he scored 13 goals and registered 22 assists across 78 regular-season games. His efforts extended deep into the playoffs, where he accumulated 17 points in 24 games, including an assist on Carter Verhaeghe's opening goal in the decisive Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final.
“Anton has matured into a dependable multirole center for our club, who seized his opportunity from his first day in North America. His commitment to improvement and cerebral approach to the game earned him the profound respect of his teammates and coaches, and we are excited to see him continue to grow and succeed with the Panthers,” said Panthers president of hockey operations and general manager Bill Zito.
Lundell was drafted No. 12 overall in the 2020 NHL Draft and has quickly become a mainstay in Florida’s lineup. Over his three seasons with the Panthers, he has racked up 43 goals and 69 assists in 216 games, proving to be a reliable and versatile player.
Building a Champion
The Panthers’ decision to extend Lundell comes on the heels of their triumphant run to the franchise's first Stanley Cup title. The team clinched the coveted trophy with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over the Edmonton Oilers in Game 7 of the Finals. With the core group of players secured—including key figures such as captain Aleksander Barkov, Matthew Tkachuk, and Gustav Forsling—all under contract at least through the 2029-30 season, the Panthers are clearly focused on sustaining their competitive edge.
Moreover, the Panthers are poised to bring back all eight of their leading scorers from last season, emphasizing continuity and collective growth. This stability positions the Panthers as strong contenders in the coming years, with their roster fortified by a blend of seasoned talent and promising young players like Lundell.
Looking Ahead
Lundell’s six-year contract is not only a testament to his current abilities but also a vote of confidence in his future potential. The young center has demonstrated a knack for performing in high-stakes situations and boasts a hockey IQ well beyond his years. By extending Lundell, the Panthers have not only retained a critical piece of their lineup but also secured a player whose best years are likely still ahead.
As the Panthers prepare for the upcoming season, the focus will undoubtedly be on building upon last year's success. With a roster that has proved its prowess and a management team committed to maintaining and enhancing the squad's strength, the foundation is set for continued excellence. Lundell is poised to play a significant role, and his presence will be instrumental as the Panthers aim to defend their title and assert their dominance in the league.
