The Philadelphia Eagles have made a significant addition to their offensive line by signing Mekhi Becton. Initially brought in to serve as a swing tackle for starters Jordan Mailata and Lane Johnson, Becton’s versatility is proving invaluable as he adapts to various roles within the team.
Becton Steps Up Amid Injuries
The signing of Becton has come at a crucial time for the Eagles. An ankle injury to Tyler Steen has left the starting right guard position vacant. In his first practice with the first team, Becton lined up at right guard and neutralized Jalen Carter during 11-on-11 drills, demonstrating his readiness and capability.
Eagles coach Nick Sirianni expressed his optimism about Mekhi’s integration into the team: "I'm looking forward to that. Mekhi has had a good camp so far and [I’m] looking forward to getting him some work next to Lane [Johnson] and continuing to work forward with that."
Training Camp Adaptations
Becton did not practice during the first few days of training camp, a period he used strategically to learn and stay engaged. This time on the sidelines allowed him to absorb valuable insights from his teammates. Reflecting on this period, Becton shared, "The first few days he wasn't practicing, but he was definitely in my ear the whole time and telling me what I was doing wrong. He's been a great help."
Landon Dickerson, the Eagles' left guard, further highlighted Becton’s adaptability and the role he has played amidst the team’s shifting lineup due to injuries. "I think Mekhi is doing great. He's had to bounce around a few positions. We had some guys get banged up. Nothing different than what happens during the season, right?" Dickerson commented.
Versatility and Value
Becton's ability to perform at multiple positions on the offensive line adds a layer of depth to the Eagles' roster. Dickerson emphasized this versatility: "We have a guy that can swing at both guard and tackle, can play both guard spots. That's a lot of value in the NFL. He's able to play four out of five positions."
The Eagles have not disclosed how long Tyler Steen will be out, but Becton’s multi-position capabilities cushion the impact of such absences. Becton remains a valuable component of the Eagles' second-team offensive line, but he is ready to step up whenever required. "I know I'm not, like that wasn't the thing when they signed me here. I don't have to get ready. I just know when my number is called I'm always gonna be ready. If I can start, I'll start. If I don't, I'll be ready," Becton asserted.
Looking Ahead
As the Eagles navigate through training camp and preseason, the addition of Mekhi Becton offers a substantial boost. His quick adaptation and the seamless fit into various roles bode well for the Eagles as they gear up for the regular season. Becton's presence not only fills immediate gaps but also strengthens the team's overall flexibility and readiness for whatever challenges lie ahead.
