The Atlanta Falcons have made a significant move to bolster their defense by acquiring four-time Pro Bowler Matt Judon. This strategic trade aims to improve a unit that ranked 25th in the NFL in quarterback pressure rate (32.7%) during the 2023 season and tied for 21st in sacks with a total of 42.0.
The Falcons and the Chicago Bears both offered a third-round pick to the New England Patriots for Judon, but ultimately, the decision was left to the star pass rusher. Judon opted to join the Falcons, a decision likely influenced by the competitive landscape of the NFC South division. "He obviously chose the Falcons because they are in an NFC South division that seems to be very much up for grabs year-to-year while Chicago has some stiff competition in the NFC North with two of their division foes, the Detroit Lions and the Green Bay Packers, both winning at least one playoff game last season," said an insider source.
Judon’s Impact
Judon has been a dominant force on the field, especially in his time from 2021 to 2022 when he tallied an impressive 28.0 sacks. This total ranks him tied for the third-most in the NFL during that period. Specifically, Judon recorded 15.5 sacks in 2022 and 12.5 sacks in 2021 for the Patriots, along with a quarterback pressure rate of 15.7% over the past three seasons.
However, the Falcons are also aware of the risks involved. Judon is coming off a season-ending torn lower bicep injury sustained in Week 4 of the 2023 season. His ability to return to peak form will be crucial for Atlanta’s defensive success.
Building a Stronger Defense
The addition of Judon is a statement of intent for the Falcons, who are focused on transforming their defensive front. This move follows recent draft picks aimed at strengthening the same area. Atlanta’s second-round pick from the 2024 NFL Draft is Clemson defensive lineman Ruke Orhorhoro, while their third-round pick is Washington rookie edge rusher Bralen Trice. Unfortunately, Trice is currently on injured reserve after tearing his ACL during the preseason opener.
Despite these injury setbacks, the Falcons are hopeful that Judon’s experience and skill set will make an immediate impact. Atlanta’s general manager noted that securing Judon was especially rewarding given their recent near-misses in the trade market. "Atlanta walked away with their prize this time after failing to do so, losing Montez Sweat to the Bears and in their bid to trade up for UCLA edge rusher Laiatu Latu," an executive familiar with the situation remarked.
QB Position Reinforcements
In addition to fortifying their defense, the Falcons have made moves to secure the quarterback position by signing Kirk Cousins. Cousins, who is also recovering from a season-ending injury, brings a wealth of experience and could play a crucial role in stabilizing the team’s offense once he returns to full health.
Aiming for Postseason Success
The Falcons have not made a postseason appearance since 2016, and these recent acquisitions indicate a clear ambition to break that streak. By addressing both defensive and offensive needs through strategic trades and draft picks, Atlanta is positioning itself as a competitive force in the NFC South.
Only time will tell if these changes will translate to on-field success, but with Matt Judon now on board and a strengthened defensive line, the Falcons’ prospects for the upcoming seasons look considerably brighter.
