A New Era in Philadelphia: Saquon Barkley Shines Early
Philadelphia Eagles fans are reveling in the promising start of their newly acquired star running back, Saquon Barkley. His arrival has ignited the fanbase with hopes for a standout season, and early performances suggest those hopes are well-founded.
A Strong Start
Through just two games, Barkley has made an immediate impact, totaling 52 touches. Remarkably consistent, he has registered 26 touches in each game. In Week 1, Barkley demonstrated his versatility and effectiveness, averaging 4.5 yards per carry on 24 carries. He followed this up with another solid performance in Week 2, averaging 4.3 yards per carry on 22 carries. Over both games, his overall average stands at an impressive 4.8 yards per touch—his highest since 2019.
Potential to Join Elite Company
If Barkley maintains his current pace, he is projected to finish the season with an astonishing 442 touches. The last running back to achieve such a feat was DeMarco Murray in 2014 during his tenure with the Dallas Cowboys. Incidentally, Murray later joined the Eagles, but struggled to replicate his peak form, recording the lowest yards-per-carry average of his career at 3.6 with Philadelphia.
Another running back who came close to this monumental workload was Le'Veon Bell, who had 406 touches in 2017. Bell's subsequent years saw a decline in productivity, highlighted by a holdout in 2018 for a lucrative contract extension and a disappointing 2019 season where he averaged only 3.3 yards per carry among backs with 250 or more attempts.
Managing Workload Concerns
Given these historical precedents, Eagles’ management is acutely aware of the necessity to carefully monitor Barkley's workload. Offensive Coordinator Kellen Moore has articulated the team's strategy to maintain Barkley's longevity throughout the season. "Obviously from a longevity standpoint as the season progresses, we've got to be aware of it," Moore stated. "We certainly recognize that and understand that aspect of it. We've got to do at times a better job of that as the game goes on, especially when you look at it more from a week-to-week perspective."
Barkley himself seems unfazed by the looming workload concerns. Exhibiting a calm confidence, Barkley expressed his trust in the Eagles' support system and his own conditioning. "I think we do a good job of managing that here. Whether I do that on my own or take care of my body. Our guys in the strength room and training room do a really great job of monitoring that," he said.
"I have no worries about that. That's why I train the way I do in the offseason, and the work I do in camp and in season to be able to take on the workload,” Barkley emphasized, reflecting his unwavering focus and commitment.
The Eagles' Strategy
Kellen Moore echoed Barkley's sentiments, highlighting the mutual understanding between player and coaching staff. "I think that's definitely fair. I think Saquon -- he wants the rock. He's done a phenomenal job," Moore noted.
The synergy between Barkley's drive and the coaching staff's strategic management points towards a concerted effort to sustain his performance throughout the season. The lessons of the past, from Murray's challenges post-heavy workload to Bell's steep decline, are certainly in play as the Eagles navigate this promising but cautious path forward.
As the season progresses, all eyes will be on how the Eagles balance Barkley’s explosive impact with the need to maintain his health and efficiency. The hopeful fans in Philadelphia are witnessing the dawn of a potentially historic season, with Saquon Barkley poised to be its central figure.
