A Stellar Performance at the Circuit des Ardennes
Team Visma | Lease a Bike Development showcased an impressive performance in the recently concluded Circuit des Ardennes, wrapping up the event with significant accomplishments. Tijmen Graat, one of the team's standout riders, clinched third overall, a testament to his prowess and the team's cohesive strategy throughout the race.
In addition to individual success, the team triumphed in the best team category, marking a remarkable achievement and highlighting their collective strength and performance. However, Matthew Brennan's withdrawal from the final stage due to fitness concerns cast a shadow on the team's celebration. Nevertheless, the goal to defend Graat's standing in the overall leaderboard remained unwavering.
Team Dynamics in Play
Jed Smithson, Morten Nørtoft, and Tom Schellekens were pivotal in supporting Graat, showcasing the importance of teamwork in cycling. Their efforts bore fruit as Graat secured an eighth-place finish in the final stage, thereby cementing his third-place position overall. Reflecting on his performance, Graat expressed satisfaction, acknowledging the strength of the two competitors who outperformed him.
“I can be satisfied with this. Of course, you hope for more and do everything you can to move up another place, but unfortunately, this was it. Two men were simply stronger,” Graat remarked, exhibiting sportsmanship and acknowledgment of the tough competition.
Pursuit of Personal Ambitions
Choosing to participate in the Circuit des Ardennes was a strategic decision aimed at challenging Graat, both in skill and endurance. This choice paid off as he gained invaluable experience in positioning, cornering, and climbing – all essential skills in competitive cycling. "We chose this race to challenge me. Here I learn to position, ride better corners, and climb better. Besides, I really liked going for my own chance," Graat shared, highlighting his ambition and growth as a cyclist.
Graat's preference for longer climbs was evident, stating, “I ESPECIALLY LIKE THE LONGER CLIMBS,” a sentiment that drives his training and race strategies. This preference, coupled with his overall performance, underscores his versatility and ability to adapt to various race profiles.
Instrumental Team Efforts and Strategies
Tom Schellekens’ role was particularly notable in the final stage, where his efforts were crucial in countering attacks and securing a fourth-place finish for himself, further demonstrating the team's depth and talent. “Today we did everything we could to secure Tijmen's third place. We knew it was going to be difficult because Tijmen specializes more in longer climbs. This was a course where you had to accelerate a lot. The guys kept a constant eye on Tijmen so he was well positioned going into the final circuit. Tom played a nice role in the final by not only countering several attacks but also finishing fourth. As a team, we were very strong and it's fantastic that it was rewarded with the team classification,” said Sierk-Jan de Haan, applauding the team’s efforts and strategy.
The collective efforts and strategic plays led Team Visma | Lease a Bike Development to claim the coveted team classification victory, a feat that did not go unnoticed by the team coach, Sierk-Jan de Haan. He praised the team's performance, emphasizing the importance of aiming to excel in every stage. “The goal was to finish as good as possible in every stage and that worked out well. The boys did a great race,” he remarked, appreciating the dedication and commitment of the team.
